Reliability Engineer - Packaging


Coordinate activities of Continuous Improvement within the Packaging Group.  Working closely to ensure all activities are done safely and follow all GMP, maintenance and quality standards.



  • Provides leadership in the management of Improvement Initiatives with supervisors, operators and maintenance staff
    • Removes barriers between departments to meet and exceed production targets
    • Applies process knowledge, equipment and system capability to set and deliver stretch targets for individual and department goals.
    • Evaluates, trains, motivates and sets goals and targets with supervisors, operators and maintenance staff
    • Implements consistent communication tools to all plant teams

Goals & Budget:

  • Identifies constraints and or barriers to meeting budget efficiencies
  • Identifies opportunities to improve performance vs budget
  • Oversees all information tracking tools and general results of the packaging departments
  • Establish and roll-out key performance indicators and tracking methods to measure packing results
    • Identify and implement initiatives to reduce the cost of material scrap.
    • Identify and implement initiatives to improve efficiencies & reduce down time costs.
  • Identify engineering & equipment design solutions to reduce labor costs where possible.


  • Plans short, medium, and long term Manpower requirements with supervisors and develops appropriate strategies to overcome obstacles.
  • Fill in for shift supervisors to cover vacations and over time as required.


  • Create specific training aids for easier understanding of processes
  • Develop, facilitate and lead reliability training programs for supervisors, maintenance and operations personnel
  • Lead root cause analysis and failure mode effect analysis Training for operators & maintenance staff.

Continuous improvement

  • Establish and implement engineering best practices such as failure mode analysis, preventative and predictive maintenance strategies including asset life cycle management processes with the objective of reducing operational risk.
  • Understands and develops KPIs following QCDSM, regularly reviewing with key players to drive improvement Drives continuous improvement within the Department in areas with a focus on, Waste Reduction & Efficiency Improvement.
  • Identify and promote continuous improvement initiatives
  • Analyze the downtime reasons, and work with the packaging group to improve efficiencies.
  • Work on projects to enhance packaging capabilities and reduce bottlenecks.
  • Working closely with the maintenance group to improve the reliability of the packaging machines.
  • Support in validating process changes, process flow definition and controls
  • Support development of engineering standards , processes and methodologies to improve the design and reliability of plant equipment.
  • Integrate TPM methodologies and techniques to improve productivity in plant equipment and their efficiencies  
  • Promptly investigates/ reports and follows through with any incident in area of responsibility
  • Work closely with the Maintenance team to reduce downtime on the packaging equipment
  • Have a good understanding of the equipment in the area of responsibility to help operators with troubleshooting
  • Mentor the Continuous Improvement team which utilizes Maintenance expertise
  • Analyze the downtime reason to minimize waste and downtime


  • Follow up on all incident reports related to the packaging department to ensure items are being addressed.
  • Support safety committee members in conducting work place inspections as required.
  • Lead/support supervisors during RCA of safety trends to identify areas for focus & improvement



  • Understands SQF requirements and audits to support department for compliance
  • Provides key input/supports Pre-PNP and all new product initiatives
  • Utilizes the compliance and effectiveness of HACCP, GMP programs, company policies and procedures and government regulations to comply with all Health & Safety programs.
  • Conduct monthly safety and GMP audits of area of responsibility.


  • Post-secondary or equivalent experience required, University Degree, Engineering or CET preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience inside a manufacturing facility or experience as a designer on packaging or automation systems.
  • Statistical control expertise in evaluating and providing solutions from operational improvements.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of mechanical drafting practices and be proficient in design, detailing and checking functions.
  • Must have in-depth understanding and working experience of FMEA methodology and applications
  • Must have working knowledge assemble processes and practices
  • Hands-on experience in manufacturing and machine troubleshooting activities
  • Experience with applied statistics, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of good manufacturing practices
  • Fluency in English both oral and written
